First Input Delay (FID) measures how long it takes for the site to become interactable.
Having a good FID score is essential for making a good first impression with new visitors.
RapidSpike allows you to monitor Max Potential FID; the duration of the longest task. This allows you to measure FID from a lab environment. As a result, you can track changes throughout the day before they impact users.
A good FID score should be 100 ms or less. A score of 100ms – 300ms is classed as needs improvement and anything above 300ms is classed as poor.
First Input Delay (FID) is being replaced by Interaction to Next Paint (INP) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024.
This measures how quickly users receive visual feedback each time they interact with the page. For example, a customer might add a product to their basket. They might receive an ‘added to basket’ message. This also works for tasks that take longer – instead, a loading page shows the user that something is happening (even if it is not instant).
Essentially, a good INP score means that your users can interact with your site and feel like it is doing something in response.
